Born in Aranđelovac, Serbia, on February 23, 1952.
Married and has two children.

- BSc Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade

- Research interests
- Condensed matter physics mainly focused on following topics:
optical properties of solids, infrared and Raman spectroscopy,
ellipsometry, lattice vibrations, magnetic properties, strongly
correlated electron systems, nanostructure research.

- Professional career
- Employed at Institute of Physics since 1975, Research
Professor since 1993. Professor at the Faculty of Electrical
Engineering in Belgrade since 1997. In 2006 he became
corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Science and Art (SASA)
and in 2012 full member of the SASA. He has been at postdoctoral
studies and sabbaticals abroad: once in England and several
times in Germany at Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Physics
- Stuttgart (the Alexander von Humboldt foundation grant,
1987-1989 and the Marie-Curie grant of the Scientific
Commission of European Community, 1992-1993). From 1999 to 2002
he was Visiting Professor at the Solid State Physics and
Magnetism Laboratory of the Catholic University of Leuven,
Belgium. From 2002 to 2003 he was Visiting Professor at the
Institute of Materials Science University of Valencia, Spain. In
addition he has visited universities of Paris, Moscow, Athens,
Berlin, etc.

- Awards
- 1989 – “Nikola Tesla” award for achievements in the field of
synthesis and characterisation of high temperature
superconducting materials.
1992 – Institute of Physics award for scientific work.

- Publications
- More than 350 scientific publications 200 of which have been
published in leading international journals, cited more than
2000 times. Dr Popovic is a co-author of textbook “Electrical
and electronic materials”, monograph “Optical properties of
nanomaterials” and author of the book “How to write and publish
scientific paper”.

- Teaching experience
- Dr Popovic has been engaged in teaching postgraduate courses
at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of
Physics of the University of Belgrade. He was a supervisor of
ten Ph.D. theses and nine MSc theses. He is a referee for many
leading international scientific journals (Phys. Rev. Let.,
Phys. Rev. B, Europhys. Letters, J. Raman spectroscopy,
Synthetic Metals, Physica Status Solidi, Infrared physics and
technology, Electronic Letters, J. Serb. Chem. Soc.) as well as
the European Science foundation (unit for physical & engineering
sciences).

- Current position
- Since 1995 he is Director of Center for Solid State Physics
and New Materials at the Institute of Physics Belgrade, which is
recognized as European Centre of excellence for optical
spectroscopy applications in physics, materials science and
environmental protection and the National Centre of Excellence
for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. He was special adviser for
capital investment in science for the Minister of Science
(2006-2009). He has been Head of the Accreditation Committee of
the Ministry of Science (2007-2010).

- Membership
- Dr Zoran V. Popovic is a member of the American Physical
Society, Serbian Physical Society, Serbian materials research
society and Serbian ceramic society. Since 2009 he has been a
member of the Programme Committee for NMP (FP7 Theme 4),
as well as member of the High Level Group of the EU
Member States and FP7 Associated States on Nanoscience and
Nanotechnologies (HLG).

- Participation in European projects
- Dr Popovic was coordinator of FP6 project OPSA (project No.
026283), group leader in FP6 project CoMePhS (STREP project No.
517039), and member of the Management Committee of COST Action
P16 - ECOM. He is also a group leader of Horizon2020 DAFNEOX
project. He currently participates in the bilateral project with
Germany, Italy and China, as well as in several bilateral
projects of the Serbian Academy of Science and Art (SASA) with
corresponding Academy of Science institutions in Bulgaria, and
Romania.
